Before I make my post I DEMAND that you all comment....it will make my effort to post in this blog worthwhile! Good or bad or whatever, I don't mind.

DNA DATABASE

I ask you all this question. What is wrong with everyone's DNA profile being stored on a central DNA database?

I challenge each and everyone of you to tell me what is wrong with that. Why should it not be done?

Then you may ask. What would this acheive?

It would not solve 100% of crime in a situation where some DNA has been left. Which leads me to my next point. 'With great power comes great responsibility'

Finding a drop of blood at a murder scene doesn't mean that that person who left that blood killed the victim. All it does is tell you that that person was there. Then that person is called in and given an oppertunity to defend themselves. These TV programs like CSI are total bullshit.

Forensics helps to place people at a crime scene, it doesn't tell you what happened at the crime scene.

What kind of person is scared of this DNA database? The people who have something to hide! It is not an invasion of ones civil liberties, stop hugging trees people this is not the 60's! It is a cruel world where there are rapes and murders everyday. And if someone is raped and they find some semen in that girl. Cross it with the database and see who she was raped by. End of story.

  • Not store ALL the detail such as health issues. Just take a cheek swab and run an electropheritic gel turn it on and see how the bands go and store that information.

Leave the insurance companies. When you say insurance do you mean like private medical care? Cause in the UK everyone can be treated for anything on the NHS regardless of medical history.

Or do you mean if you get an illness in which you lose independat existance and you have an insurance policy it pays out?

Regardless both shouldn't have access to this sort of data.

  • Come on mariam. Nazi's?

Nazi's tried to wipe out all jews and create a world where had blonde hair and blue eyes. This is nothing compared to that! Not read the entry on toq's blog though.

Allowing the police (I've only ever mentioned the police) and only the police access to details would without a doubt dramatically reduce the time to charging a suspect in a crime.

When you say who decides. In the UK the houses of parliament would decide. The normal ways that bills become laws. Through the house of commons and then the lords...blah blah blah...

To you first point, I think the American view to healthcare is a disgrace, i.e. the system of get your credit card out before you get treated. Or go bankrupt because you have claimed as much as you can on your medical insurance for your diabetes medecine. In my opinion healthcare is a right not a priveledge. (I mean no offence to you knowing you are a medical student, the Doctors aren't at fault, the system is)

In the end, IF (God forbid) someone I hold dear to myself is a victim of some sexual assault. That person can be caught very quickly with this sort of DNA database.

As it stands approximatly 1 in 3 males in the UK are already on the DNA database though!

Again I come to the point that this system should only be feared by the people who have something to hide.

  • Hmm.. lol at "stop hugging trees people!"...

Well personally i don't think there is any harm in this.. yes it may help with cases of commited crime......

I think people are more unhappy about identity cards... been carried around etc..

I think people are alot more paranoid than they used to be aswell.. i blame all these sci-fis...

    Really.
